Bit Funk – The Long Road Ahead

Bit Funk - The Long Road Ahead

Bit Funk – The Long Road Ahead

Bit Funk has always worked a bit behind the scenes, mostly handing out independent free downloads over the past year – and usually of an upbeat, dancefloor-exciting mood. The Long Road Ahead comes in with a slightly bigger, more melodic and even still, relaxing tone. A powerful bassline pulls through the breakdown and into the second chorus to drive home smooth piano chords and that damn catchy/playful synth riff. Hats off to Bit for starting off the new year on the right foot and setting the tone for independent grooves in Brooklyn. Grab it for free below:

Larry Levan Live @ Sound Factory, NY [3.22.1991]

6 Jan
Larry Levan (circa late 1980s)

Larry Levan (circa late 1980s)

Here’s your history lesson for the weekend: Larry Levan, the godfather of djing. Larry was offered a residency back in 1977 in New York at the legendary Paradise Garage – mind you this was at a time when disco was at it’s peak popularity, the LGBT community thrived in underground clubs like this and heavy drug use influenced djing’s creative innovation. Paul Oakenfold has been quoted in his experience of Larry’s sets that Larry wasn’t at the top of the list when it came to mixing – of course, he knew very well how to beat match, but his real skill set resided in selecting exactly what the crowd wanted to hear, whether they knew it or not.

Larry championed his way to the top alongside DJ’s like Frankie Knuckles, as well as countless big name producers during in his rise to underground fame throughout the 1980s. Considered one of the most legendary DJs and most influential American dance icons, Larry died somewhat prematurely at the age of 38 due to heart complications. Take a listen back to one of his sets a year prior to his passing to get a sense of his impeccable flavor and taste:

Wild Bunch – Final Product #2 [Disco Mix]

Final Product #2-1

Wild Bunch brings us the second installment of his not-so-monthly-but-always-tasty “Final Product” mix series. This time around he captures the happy-times holiday vibe and puts a poolside spin on it with help from artists such as Classixx, Kartell, Disclosure and  Snakeships’ remix of Wild Belle’s “It’s Too Late” that gets me every. damn. time. The mix is just over 35 minutes and we can promise you it will be time well listened. Check out Wild Bunch’s Soundcloud for past mixes and stay tuned for the next one. Tracklist after the jump, cheers.

Miami Horror DJs – Pink Grapefruit [Mix]

Miami Horror DJs

Miami Horror DJs

I can’t recall the last time we featured Miami Horror, but my guess would be around the last time we listened to Shazam’s remix of their hit SometimesJesus, that was a while ago…and far too long for these Melbourne natives. Since then, they’ve formed a DJ alternative to their four-piece live band and have been heavily at work to release a full-fledged album in 2013. After briefly speaking with some of their reps, by God Miami Horror is ready to burst back onto the scene in the new year. In the meantime, they put out the second addition to their DJ sets, Pink Grapefruit.

The mix and their sets in general fall under the indie dance spectrum, but fairly classed up for my taste (which also rewards my approval). They start out with Plastic Plates’ remix of Sam Sparro and delve deeper from there. Full track listing provided after the jump:
